can we have soul land 2.5 added to this fandom (not just the spoiler page) which is up-to-date with the manhua? i keep seeing questions about who is what god and i think this would just be easier than repeatedly explaining
Could you please help me rename the Sword Spirit page into Seven Kill Sword, since the only sword spirit introduce is said sword, and the only user is also Chen Xin the user of Seven Kill Sword, even the description is of The Seven Kill sword. Thanks
I noticed you changed Seraph back to Seraphim. I realise the translation uses "Seraphim", but that is a simple mistranslation; Seraphim is plural form of Seraph. I recommend to go either with the correct term (i.e., Seraph), or to stick to the literal translation (i.e., 6 Winged Angel), but we should avoid promoting the mistake.
I think,it must stay as Seraphim, because although you are correct, the Seraphim word here is use as a specific name just like a first name of a human(ex.John,Alex etc.).If Seraphim word here is just use as a noun then the word seraphim should not start in capital "S",and should write as "seraphim",as i read the 3 chapters i notice that Seraphim word is always start in capital S,so I deduced that word is use as a name not as a mere noun or pronoun.
For the example the word "angel".If that word as a ordinary noun, then the plural of it is "angels",but that word must not start with capital letter "A" unless the word angel is the first word in the sentence. If the word angel is use as a specific word for example a name of a female human, then that word must wrote with capital A, whatever it's position in the sentence.
Sometimes theres a word that can use as both as noun and as a name.
I wholeheartedly agree that Seraphim sounds better and—for quite some time—I also used it instead of Seraph, but then one day I actually looked into the matter and it has never been the same.
@Ashzure: From what I understand the literal translation of the spirit's name is "Six Winged Angel", which makes "Seraph" an interpreted name. Someone simply thought that Seraphim is the singular form without confirming, like I would have done about 2 years ago myself.
Even if you take it as an actual name, there is still going to be distinction between singular and plural forms (e.g., John vs. Johns).
Actually if i use your logic then it still be "Seraphim" because there's 2 users of that spirit ( 3 if you add the previous supreme pontiff).Actually the word John and Johns was still have a difference, the first one is use as a specific/actual name and the 2nd one was use as a general name.
I only said that because of the sentence structure, as it written consisted as "Seraphim" not as "seraphim".Even in case on how the word six winged angel was written,if is written consistently as "Six Winged Angel" then that word was use as a specific name and if is written consistently as "six winged angel then the word is use as a general name/ordinary noun.
Sometimes a simple word when it is used in the sentence,it changes it's meaning.
That isn't even remotely related to the logic I describe. At best, it's your logic, and it suggests that Clear Sky Hammer should be called Clear Sky Hammers, Jade Phosphor Serpent should be called Jade Phosphor Serpents, and so forth... In other words, it's just wrong.
I know what you say, and I'm telling you it doesn't change the issue. As far as the distinction between plural and singular forms is concerned, proper nouns are subject to the same rules as common nouns. You can use Seraphim (i.e., plural form) to address or to describe a group of at least two people with the Seraph spirit, but this doesn't change the name of the spirit. Moreover, this use never came up in the translation.
From wiki : A seraph (/ˈsɛr.əf/; pl. seraphs or seraphim /ˈsɛr.ə.fɪm/, in the King James Version also seraphims (plural); Hebrew: שָׂרָף śārāf, plural שְׂרָפִים śərāfîm; Latin: seraphim and seraphin (plural), also seraphus (-i, m.); Greek: σεραφείμ serapheím) is a type of celestial or heavenly being in Christianity and Judaism.]
So it seems that in different languages seraphim becomes both singular (in Latin, Greek and King James Version) and plural (in English and Hebrew).
I'm aware, but English is the only language of consequence when it comes to both Chinese-English translation and English wikia. If our consideration reaches beyond English, then the best course of action would be to keep the Chinese names.
EDIT: I noticed the King James version in your comment only now. To be precise, the King James Version doesn't suggest "Seraphim" as an alternative singular form, it merely suggests "Seraphims" as an alternative plural form.
Have you ever contact Begelson and Co. and asked why they use the term Seraphim instead of Six Winged Angel as the name of the spirit??
Since Begelson decided to officially to translate in that name then we must follow it since this wikia follows the series base on it's translation, and if insists that we keep the Chinese names(Original Novel Format) then the whole wikia must also updated base on the original chinese soul land series, which there's no more spoilers since the DD1 and DD2 are already finished.
First, no I haven't and there is no proper reason to. Their use of "Seraphim" is an undeniable mistake; at best, I would bring it to their attention, not ask them why they made it. I suppose the question could be why "Seraph" instead of "6 Winged Angel", but this distinction doesn't bother me in the least. Basically, my interest lies with this wiki as I like to contribute to it on occasion. I have no investment in the translations themselves. That said, I did look around their website and although I'd be willing to bring the Seraph issue to their attention, there is no convenient means of doing it.
Second, no one insists on using the Chinese names. I simply said that if the English term isn't used, then we should use the Chinese term. In other words, it doesn't matter that Latin supports the use of "Seraphim" as singular form, because the only languages that are relevant in Chinese-English translation are English and Chinese. This makes the only accepted and correct versions the Chinese original, the literal English translation (i.e., 6 Winged Angel), and the interpreted English translation (i.e., Seraph).
As for the wiki content... To my knowledge, this wiki relies on Bagelson and co's translation only because they are actually translating, not because of who they are. This means that their translation can be questioned and, with proper support, overruled. It should be noted that they usually go with the literal translation, so there are not many chances for this kind of slip-up.
Finally, we should stop this. We are spamming Hussey's wall, and the use of "Seraphim" as the singular form in an English translation can only be explained as a mistake. Bagelson and co. tend to correct their mistranslations when they notice them or when someone brings it to their attention, so I suspect this will be corrected in the future. Either way, it's already correct on this wiki. =)
Translators will always take liberties during their translations. They don't always make the literal translations... for example in MGA, the Earth ranked taboo skill's literal translation is Beheader something but FBT translated it as Firmament Slasher.
So translators opt for the cooler sounding words rather than the correct English translation.
This is the other dimension in translations. What I cover in this thread is the grammar perspective, while these kind of liberties tinker with the meaning.
To illustrate, 6 Winged Angel and Seraph mean the same thing (i.e., Seraph is described as a 6 Winged Angel), while Seraphim describes multiple instances of Seraph. On the other hand, "Beheader something" and "Firmament Slasher" may differ in the meaning to some degree, and yet they appear to (depends on the "something") match grammatically.
Hey! Are you back? I see the edits, I thought I would be able to contribute much unfortunately I have Anatomy, Biochem and Physio finals in just over two months. And all of them are solid, so I have been trying to do the basics on the wikia and couldn't keep up with the plot. Now I might be able to since the release rate has decreased massively. Let me know if you need any help yeah
Oh damn :(. Don't worry, you will pass. Can you possibly re-sit the exam?
I passed first year somehow, but I have to sit chemistry again in 4th semester. Bain of my life. xD
I will defo be back during Easter holidays, but I heard in Bulgaria 3rd semester is the hardest. So I can't fully guarantee it.
Also, have you been keeping up with the novels? I didn't want CD to finish, but it was amazing. ST is nearly over too! Only two volumes left! Because of exams I dropped a lot of novels, such SYWZ and ISSTH. I intended to pick them up again, but just could not find the time.
I ended up dropping ATG, because I felt the recent arcs (translated) were repeated and I couldn't stand his arrogance anymore. However I have been keeping up with the spoilers. The recent arc (raws) for it looks amazing, so I will pick it up when the translation reaches there.
I don't know if you read True Martial World or Transcending The Nine Heavens. But I would recommend them so much. Both the MC's are really smart and its more about plot rather than just plain old fighting and revenge etc. The translation has caught up to the raws for True Martial World.
I have been keeping up. Reading helps me alliviate my stress. In fact I did pick up a few novels as well xD
CD had kinda a rushed ending, so yeah not exactly the best ending I hoped for. ST is also almost there, but DE is like a never ending novel. 45 volumes!!! The current arc of SYWZ is indeed a bit boring, so it's better to bulk read, same as with ZTJ. I agree with you on ATG. Not only is he becoming more arrogant, and the story repetitive, he is increasing his harem quite easily :/
I do read TMW. It is indeed quite amazing. I also read TTNH, although I feel the plot moves a little too slowly, but not as slow as ZTJ. I started Chaotic Sword God. It's also quite good. ISSTH has been pretty great lately, so you might wanna get back to it soon as you have time.
Hope you are well and had a great start to 2016!. I am not sure if you are aware or not, but DD3 has been released. Also the translation has started too!! You can find that here .Also Rumstein's is kindly providing us with chapter by chapter spoilers for DD3 on the DD3 Spoilers page. So I was wondering, shall we create a new tab on the Wikia Navigation Bar for Soul Land III? I am still busy with exams, I have noticed the DD1 pages needs to be updated a bit. I will do that after the exams.
Recently I took ownership of the Coiling Dragon Wikia. It has been hard work to keep improving it and it's going really steady now^^
I have great admiration for your contribution to this wiki and what it has become so far! I still have ways to go, but I'll get there eventually. Unfortunately on the CD wiki there's not much editing activity aside form me, but that may change in the future. :)
Since both your and my wiki are about the same category, it would be awesome if we could affiliate! That way we would both contribute even more to the spreading of knowledge on Chinese works of art throughout the world! ^^ (I also noticed that a link to both your Soul Land wiki and the Shen Yin Wang Zuo wiki were present on my wiki before I took it up)
